No-Cost Doulas

“A Doula for Everyone Who Wants One”

In multiple scholarly reviews, Doulas have been shown to have a positive impact on birth outcomes. In particular, Doulas have been shown to improve the subjective experience of the birth process for mothers. Birthing parents who knew what a Doula is and wanted one identified cost as the reason for not having one. So, internationally, making Doulas available to all parents whom want one has become an objective of the Maternity Community. Improving access to labor companions is a Quality Standard of the World Health Organization and a 2022 Policy Priority of the March of Dimes.

New York City even has implemented a Citywide Doula Initiative and is piloting Medicaid coverage for Doulas. Doulas have come a long way from a grassroots movement of women helping women through the labor process.

Still, there is much to be done. To fill the gap, many Doulas work with their communities to provide low to no-cost Doula support. Ask your local Doula Matching Agencies about community support funds and check with individual Doulas regarding sliding scales.
