Pediatric Providers
At one and five minutes after birth a healthcare provider, often a nurse, will assess your baby’s wellbeing and decide if intervention is necessary. This is done using the APGAR Score.
Besides this assessment, your baby likely will not need another assessment until 24 hours postpartum.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a newborn assessment at 24hrs postpartum and that your newborn’s first outpatient appointment take place 48 to 72hrs after discharge from the birthing facility. Hospital staff will ask you for the pediatrician’s contact information upon admission to the labor and delivery unit. So, it is important that you choose a pediatrician before you go into labor.
Practical aspects to consider when choosing a pediatric provider:
- Distance
- Availability
- Hospital Affiliation
- Goodness of Fit, i.e., do you get along.
