Breastfeeding is the gold standard in feeding infants. But, less than half of newborns and six-month-old infants are exclusively breastfed.
Breastfeeding is important because it reduces babies’ risk of life-threatening gastrointestinal conditions, provides infants with immune support, reinforces parent-infant bonding, and reduces the risk of allergies, diabetes, and obesity later in life.
Mothers benefit from breastfeeding with a lower risk of breast cancer, diabetes, and depression. Contrary to popular myth, pregnancy not breastfeeding may change the appearance of the breast. Mothers have a faster return to pre-pregnancy weight when they breastfeed.
As important as breastfeeding is to both mother and baby, it has fallen out of the norm due to lack of confidence and support. Here is where Certified Lactation Counselors (CLC) come into the picture.
Certified Lactation Counselors can help mothers achieve that crucial first milk expression one hour after giving birth. They also can counsel mothers on optimizing latch, keeping an adequate milk supply, and knowing when to seek medical advice.
I am certified to provide lactation counseling. Appointments may be booked below.
