What to Bring to The Hospital

The hospital bag is a staple in the “We’re having the baby” dash to the maternity unit. What should it include?

A Backless Maxi Dress

The hospital, of course, will have its own gowns. But, they’re notoriously immodest. You may want to bring your own backless gown for more control of how you look and what gets seen.

Toiletry Purse

Toiletries include hair ties, travel toothbrush and paste, deodorant, lotion, maternity/period pads, combs and brushes. If you plan to go glam, bring along makeup for videos and pictures. It may be a fun way to pass the time.

Entertainment

Speaking of passing the time. Giving birth can take hours to days. Music, games, baby-booking and journaling are all communal ways to bond and keep your spirits up during labor. Remember your cellphone and chargers for all electronics.

Your Favorite Pillow and Blanket

Ergonomic, family heirlooms, cartoon favorites. Whatever makes them special bring them with you. It’s comforting to have a piece of home in a strange place. Bring along a nursing pillow as well.

Clear and Easily Digestible Sugars

Most hospitals will say only clear fluids are allowed. This can leave mothers low on the energy they need to give birth. I’ve witnessed women shaking from hypoglycemia during delivery. So, bring along simple sugars that can enter the system quickly: honey sticks, apple juice, ginger ale to settle the stomach.

Change of Clothes

After delivery you’ll want a fresh change of clothes. Most postpartum stays are a couple of days. Bring along underwear and a couple of pajama sets. Short-sleeved and openings in the front are best for maneuvering hospital procedures and breastfeeding. If you’re a bra everyday wearing type of person, bring wireless nursing bras for easy access. If you prefer your own socks, make sure they’re nonslip.

Important Documents

Picture ID, insurance cards, completed hospital paperwork, the birth plan, glasses and/or contacts to read it all, along with cash, change and credit cards.

A Cooler

If you’re planning placenta encapsulation, you’ll need a medium to large sized cooler to bring the placenta home.
