Labor is divided into the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd stages. During the 1st stage of labor, the cervix effaces (softens, shortens, and thins) and dilates (opens).
This first stage happens in two phases: Early Labor-1 to 5cm dilated- and Active Labor- 6 to 10cm dilated.
These are the signs your body is getting prepared for birth hours, days, or even weeks before you actually move into active labor.
The Baby Drops
This also is known as ‘Lightening.’ If this is your first pregnancy, a few weeks before your due date, you may notice your baby drop lower in your belly, making it easier for you to breathe. At the other end, you may need to pee more frequently because the baby is pressing on your bladder. If this is not your first pregnancy, it is likely your baby will not drop until labor.
Frequent Braxton Hicks Contractions
Some experience Braxton Hicks Contractions throughout their pregnancies; others, only towards the end. Braxton Hicks Contractions are nonpainful tightening of the uterus, felt at the lower abdomen or near the pubis. More frequent Braxton Hicks Contractions, sometimes called practice contractions, are a sign labor is coming.
“Bloody Show”
Bloody show is from the normal rupture of blood vessels in your cervix as it softens and thins. Bloody show may be accompanied by the release of your mucous plug or your mucous plug may release days or weeks before. The mucous plug helps keep bacteria from entering your uterus. Don’t worry. Your uterus will continue to produce this mucous to the end of your pregnancy. Always contact your healthcare provider when there is a change in your vaginal discharge.
Prelabor Rupture of Membranes (PROM)
Only 10% of mothers’ water break before going into labor. But, if a mother’s water does break before experiencing contractions, she is on average 24 to 48 hours away from going into labor. Celebrate!
